At present, it is widely accepted that the utilization of the advanced technology of synchrotron light source is highly beneficial to scientific research community.  Moreover, synchrotron light can be used in various advanced research and technology development.  Especially, in the developed countries, it is one of the main research facilities for various kinds of industrial research and development. Synchrotron Light Research Institute (Public Organization) (SLRI), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, pursues the mission of enhancing national scientific and technological research, leading to the sustainable development of Thailand. This is in accordance with SLRI’s vision “Be a national research center with high efficiency in performing and promoting synchrotron research and development for sustainable development of Thailand”.

Functions
1.    To develop the Siam Photon Laboratory to provide synchrotron light for research by government sectors, private sectors, educational institutes in Thailand as well as international users.
2.    To carry out research and develop synchrotron technology and promote collaborations between research centers, educational institutes and private sectors.
3.    To develop manpower in science and technology.
Promote higher education and technology transfer related to synchrotron light.

Objectives
Synchrotron Light Research Institute (Public Organization) has main objectives in developing and utilizing the Siam Photon Source along following directions:

Scientific Research: Synchrotron techniques are very powerful tools for research and technology development in various fields, for examples, physics, chemistry, biology and medical science. This is because the research on materials can utilize the synchrotron light in a wide spectrum, for e.g., VUV (vacuum ultraviolet), Soft x-rays and Hard x-rays.

Technology Transfer: The development of the Siam Photon Source leads to the transfer of advanced technology into Thailand in various aspects, for examples:
•    Accelerator physics and accelerator technologies that involve many advanced technologies, such as (1) ultrahigh vacuum (10-10 Torr), (2) high field magnet technology, and (3) high power microwave technology.
•    Beamline technologies, such as the optical systems for various photon energies and the detectors.
•    Control system technology.

Human Resource Development: Train scientists and advanced technologies to support foundation for Thailand development.
Synchrotron Beam and Related Equipment Services
The Siam Photon Laboratory at the Synchrotron Light Research Institute (Public Organization) serves the researchers with the synchrotron light, modern scientific equipments and tools at international standard.  This is to promote and enhance the utilization of synchrotron light to serve users’ need.

Synchrotron Research Grant and Scholarship
The SLRI provides financial supports for researchers and students to perform research related to synchrotron from both government and private sectors in Thailand in form of student’s scholarship and research grants.
•    Research grant up to three years, the research proposal could be submitted throughout the year.
•    Scholarships for graduate students will be given to highly qualified graduate students        (5 master degree and 5 for Ph.D. per year).
