Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization): GISTDA established since November 3, 2000, as a state organization under the supervision of Minister of Science and Technology. Being a core organization for space and geo-informatics activities, GISTDA’s mission includes direct reception, archiving and processing satellite remote sensing data in various forms, data analysis and integration with GIS as well as distribution of such data to users worldwide. Transfer of space application and geo-information technologies is another important task of GISTDA in order to increase awareness and promote the use of geo-informatics among the users nationwide.

At present, GISTDA directly receives satellite data from THEOS (Thailand Earth Observation Satellite), LANDSAT, RADARSAT and ALOS.  Its receive radius is 2,500 kilometers from Bangkok covering Malaysia,  Singapore,  the Philippines,  Indonesia (Kalimantan, Java  and  Sumatra), Brunei Darussalam,  Laos,  Cambodia, Vietnam  Myanmar, the southern part of China,  Hong Kong,  Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka,  Bhutan and Thailand. Our two ground stations are located at Lat Krabang District in Bangkok and at Si Racha District, Chon Buri Province.

Functions
1. To develop space technology and geo-informatics applications to be beneficial to the general public.
2. To develop the satellite data base and the derived natural resources information center.
3. To provide data services relating to space technology and geo-informatics.
4. To provide technical services and develop human resource in satellite remote sensing and geo-informatics.
5. To conduct researches and development as well as to  implement other activities related to space technology, including the development of small satellites for natural resources survey.
6. To be the core organization to establish common standards for remote sensing and geo-informatics system.

Thailand Earth Observation Satellite (THEOS)
THEOS, the first earth observation satellite of Thailand, was launched on October 1, 2008 at 13:37 hrs. (local time) by Dnepr Launcher from  launch base in Yasny, Russia. Under the cooperation between Thailand and France, THEOS has been developed and operated by GISTDA. THEOS imagery can be applied in various fields such as cartography, land use, agriculture, forest, forest fire monitoring, disaster management and national security.

Twenty Thai engineers had joined on-the-job training course on advanced satellite design and development with the French Team from EADS Astrium Company in Toulouse, France for about 2 years during March 2005 and April 2007. At present, THEOS Control and Receiving Station at Si Racha District, Chon Buri Province is operated by GISTDA engineers.
